Jamie offenbart Gillian endlich die ganze Wahrheit über die Bedrohung durch die G.E.D. Doch mit einer klugen juristischen Lösung gelingt es ihnen, Meadowland dauerhaft zu schützen.
For days, Jamie had been different than usual. Quiet. Thoughtful.
Gillian: “Jamie, what’s going on? You’ve been so silent for days, completely lost in your thoughts.”
Jamie: “Do you remember our first ride with Snap and Coffee? That’s when I fell in love with you. But the old Jamie would never have dared to tell you.”
Gillian: “Why are you saying this now? Did I do something wrong?”
Jamie: “You did nothing wrong. I did. Come on, let’s sit down over there.”
We sat on a tree stump.
Jamie: “There’s something I didn’t tell you. But I can’t and won’t have secrets from you. It’s about my father and the G.E.D. But don’t worry — Claire’s father took care of everything.”
Jamie told me the whole story. I was shocked. I knew his father was a difficult man, but I never imagined he would go that far. Jamie felt terrible for not acting himself — and for not telling me the truth right away. He was ashamed of his father and despised him more than ever. To him, his father no longer existed. But Jamie had done the right thing. He had asked for help — and found it. I would have done the same in his place.
Gillian: “Jamie, you are not like your father. You carry no guilt — none at all. You are a good man. A man I trust blindly. And love.”
I absolutely had to thank Claire’s father.
Gillian: “Jamie, I called Claire’s father to thank him. He remembered something that could solve our problem for good. It’s called an easement.”
I explained it to Jamie. An easement is a permanent restriction entered into the land registry - for example: ‘On this property, the exploration, extraction, or use of natural resources is prohibited.’
It couldn’t simply be revoked and would apply to all future owners. I would remain the owner, and there would be no restrictions on ranch operations, riding, or any future buildings.
Jamie: “That sounds incredible. That would end all our fears and worries - and completely ruin those vultures’ plans.”
A lawyer friend of Claire’s father had already prepared a legally secure, incontestable application. It had been notarized and the easement entered into the land registry. Meadowland was safe. A few days later, Mr. Kembell himself showed up - followed by Mrs. Drake. This time, I could face them calmly.
Mrs. Drake: “This project cannot be stopped. Sometimes cooperation… is wiser.”
Gillian: “Then you should read this first.”
I handed Mr. Kembell a copy of the land registry entry. He read it - and his face turned red as a tomato.
Mr. Kembell: “What?! I have no further interest. Mrs. Drake, we’re leaving.”
And just like that, they were gone.
Gillian: “We did it, Jamie. Meadowland is our safe home now.”
Jamie: “You did it, Gillian. Our home. The home of our four children, our twelve grandchildren, our thirty-four -
There he was again — the Jamie I loved so much.
Jamie: “…no wait, better just thirty-three great-grandchildren and -”
Gillian: “Finally, he’s talking nonsense again… I’ll go ahead, this could take hours.”
Later, I went to thank Mr. Riverton in person.
Mr. Riverton: “That wasn’t necessary, Gillian. At first, I wasn’t convinced Meadowland was the right place for my daughter. But I realized something — Meadowland is a place where people are allowed to stay… and grow.”
Back home, I looked down at the stable. I saw all the people for whom this ranch was a place of belonging. And I thought of his words. Meadowland… a place where people are allowed to stay - and grow. Yes. That was exactly what it was.
