Jamie und Gillian genießen ihr frisches Glück zunächst heimlich. Doch zwischen Zaunpfählen, neugierigen Blicken und einem Abendessen in Jamies Zimmer wird Verstecken immer schwieriger.
Jamie and I decided to keep it to ourselves for a few days that we were now a couple. It felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I felt happy, free, and loved. And Jamie… the glow in his eyes every time he looked at me — and he did constantly — told me everything. It was the right decision. My heart belonged to him now. After winter, there was plenty of work to do on the ranch.
Gillian: “We need to fix the fence. The snow was too heavy and it collapsed.”
Jamie: “We? That means you’re helping. Grab the tools — I’ll remove the boards.”
Jamie knelt at my feet, holding a fence post — completely crooked.
Gillian: “Can’t you see properly? The post is totally slanted.”
Jamie, however, only had eyes for me.
Jamie: “I see perfectly fine — especially in this marriage proposal position. And I like what I see. Since I’m already kneeling, we could just take care of the proposal right now.”
I decided to hold the fence post myself while he hammered it in. Jamie wrapped his arms around my waist. Nearby, Claire and Wesley were chatting by the outer stables.
Gillian: “What are you doing? We’re not alone.”
Jamie: “Don’t you see? The post is perfectly straight — you are crooked. I’m just fixing that. I have to do everything myself around here.”
Claire and Wesley had been watching the whole time.
Claire: “I can’t believe it. Wesley, are you seeing this too?”
Wesley: “I’ve been watching for an hour. The way they look at each other — something’s definitely going on.”
Finally, the fence was standing again and we moved on to other tasks.
Jamie: “That was very professional. To celebrate, I’m inviting you to dinner at my place tonight. I’ll cook.”
Gillian: “Well, I’m impressed. I didn’t even know you could cook. I’m curious.”
Suddenly, there was a loud crash behind us — the freshly repaired fence collapsed again. Dinner took place in Jamie’s room. Since he didn’t have a table, we ate on a picnic blanket on the floor. There were… sandwiches.
Gillian: “Dinner was great, Jamie.”
Jamie: “I spared no effort. I stood in the kitchen for hours.”
After eating and talking for a while, I quietly slipped out late at night. After all, no one was supposed to notice. A voice from the darkness asked:
Voice: “Gillian?! What are you doing here?”
It was Claire, standing outside the accommodation with Rowan, both clearly amused.
Gillian: “Oh, I was just checking if there’s still milk in the fridge.”
Claire: “And? Was there? You’re out pretty late for that.”
Rowan: “Jamie’s still awake too. I’m sure he helped you with that…”
